CASE STUDIES: Boardrooms

Overview:

A Boston based company has a “Focused Group” business. The business is hired by companies to help determine the effectiveness of their advertising. The traditional environment includes a focused group in one conference room and the Manufacturers observers in an adjoining room.  A one-way mirror separates the two rooms. A brick wall separates the new “Focused Group” room from the new Observation Room. Building codes prevent the company from opening up the brick wall to install a one-way mirror.

Solution:

Performance Plus contacted us to devise a solution. After meeting with the customer we concluded that the best solution was to install a virtual one-way mirror using cameras and flat panel display technology. It is important to emulate the look and feel of the large one-way mirror. In order to simulate this look and feel, the flat panel display must be as large as the dimensions of the room and the company’s budget allow.

In addition to the large flat panel display, we instsalled two additional, but smaller flat panel displays. The system allows Performance Plus to send any video image or combination of images to a flat panel display. The observation room has wall speakers mounted on either end of the video display wall, which are used to hear the focus group conversation. The video and audio from the focus group is recorded on a DVR. The DVR, PC, DVD and other AV equipment are housed in an equipment rack in the observation room.

The Focus Group room has high quality cameras strategically located throughout the room. These cameras are controlled by a wireless touch panel located in the observation room and also from a joystick controller controlled by an operator from the observation room. There are controllable observation camera located above the conference room table. This camera is used to observe hand motion during some experiments that involve object manipulation. This room has strategically located microphones to pick up all conversations of the Focus Group. On one wall is a whiteboard for use by the focus group during certain sessions. One or more of the room’s cameras allows viewing activity at the board.

The solution included the following equipment: In the focus group room: 4 Wall View Sony EVID-D100/Mount/CAT 5 System 2 Ceiling mountable, omindirectional microphone with universal phantom power adaptor.

In the Observation Room: 1 Quick-Connect 4 Video Power and Control Wiring Center 1 LG Electronics 60"Plasma 2 LG Electronics - 42" Plasma 1 Crestron 8" Wi-fi wireless touch panel.
